I live in SF and we all think Napa is for tourists and Sonoma is for locals. If you want recs within SF post again and say what kind of restaurants you like.

What time of year? What type of activities? Whole family or just you and spouse?

The highway around Big Sur washes out during big storms. We were going to drive up the coast last spring but had to cut inland as a section was out. Have a back up plan.

Personally, I find Napa and wine country boring. I’d do SF.

What do you like to do? I’m in the Bay Area. I loved our trip without kids to Healdsburg about 7 years ago. These days my favorite spot is Point Reyes and just being out in nature - but there’s not a lot going on there.

Big Sur is about an hour south of Carmel. Go and stay at the Post Ranch or Ventana. Be ready to spend a lot of $$$

You do not need to fly to Sonoma or Napa. I don't even think you can from Monterey/Carmel unless you have a private plane. With traffic (and there is traffic) it will take you about 4ish hours from Carmel to either spot.

Definitely need to know your budget and preference on wine:

Sonoma/Healdsburg (more chill)
Wines: more pinots, lighter whites
High Budget: Montage, Farmhouse Inn (a little away from dt Healdsburg, but very lovely),
Low(er) Budget: any of the Piazza hotels- Hotel Healdburg, H2, etc.
Boutique hotels that are supposed to be really nice: Madrona (have brunch there), Single Thread (the restaurant!!), Hotel Les Mar (we stayed for a night-very cute and European feel).

Napa (busier, but popular for a reason)
Wines: chards and cabs
High Budget: Auberge (adults only-- highly recommend), Solage, Meadowood (can have a lot of kids), Bardossono
Low(er) Budget: Napa is overall pricey, but there are a few properties in dt Napa that are decent including the Westin (can have a lot of kids).

Thank you so much! Sorry I should have been clear about flying, I meant that we have some flexibility with flights. We can fly into San Jose and out of SF or whatever makes the most sense.

Big Sur would be the obvious choice, especially if you've never been.

Hi! Where would you suggest for a few nights in the Bay area for a milestone weekend? We will be going to Carmel first for a wedding and adding on a few days. Considering Big Sur, SF, Napa, Sonoma, etc. We will have a car and can easily fly in and out of different airports in the area.
