For minor issues I’d have DC stick it out but if the situation is toxic or the level is a complete mismatch, then it makes sense to leave. DC stuck out the year many times but at u16 he needed to make a move. Most clubs will release your child, just be prepared that it may cost you since you signed a year contract. In DS’s case, the old club’s TD was kind enough to let him go realizing that DS had a good opportunity and knowing we’d been open about concerns from the start of the season. It was really a smooth transition and DS’s new team is the ideal environment. It makes sense to always do things as respectfully as possible because the soccer world is small, especially as kids get older. Multiple times a season DS goes up against an old coach or old teammates so I’m glad no bridges have been burned.

Depends on league. Maryland State Soccer Association (which cards kids who play USYS) will always side with club. Full stop.

I had my kid show up to all practices for the shi**y owner — and guest played in higher league- happened to be ECNL - completely different card.

You could also join a Virginia team for a season - totally different card.

You need to provide context to “competitive” —how high of a level can your son play—and also be realistic it’s mid-year. Bethesda and Potomac have numerous teams, and their top ones are strongest in area, but it’s hard to make them and more likely to get put on the lowest mid-year. They generally take anyone with a pulse’s money so making it not a problem.

MSI travel and Juventus have solid teams that age but may have full rosters.

They cannot hold a player card if you are paid in full for the year. As long as you have no balance with the current club you can leave whenever you want. If you are not paid in full then yes, they can and will hold your player card and you can't do anything about it besides pay them.

If you have paid in full, you can switch teams. The club can only hold the player card for 5 days per NCSL regs. The key is you have to pay off your balance with the current club.

Can one change teams mid season? Like now? My son is 11 and has played a few years. What competitive MD travel teams would you recommend? We are in North Bethesda area.
