It's always a crapshoot, as someone else said. I had a few nice runs at Sugarbush today but not much terrain was open. And it's possible that in two or three weeks time we could have a stretch of rain and 40 degrees.

Vermont can be great. But planning far in advance is asking for disappointment.

I went ahead and made hotel reservations but can cancel them up to 2 days before. Hoping the weather this month holds up - it’s looking good so far. Even if it’s half open it will be worthwhile for a couple of days. We have Ikon passes so don’t need to buy lift tix.

In all seriousness, Vermont is always a crapshoot. They will have a period of good conditions, then it will rain, then it will be 14 degrees and ice over. Rinse and repeat.

I was just at going to say this. We went to Maine one year for MLK weekend and it was 50 degrees and pouring rain one day. If you live nearby and can drive up when conditions are good, New England skiing can be great but otherwise, it is a gamble

Went to Stowe a couple of years ago for Christmas. I like green runs. There were only 3 runs in tolerable shape. I did them over and over again. The men in my family had a lot of blue run choices.

It was icy. A kid slid into me from 10 feet away while I was standing off to the side. He broke my metal pole. Another day it rained.

I have not had good luck with Stowe, Sugarbush or Mt. Ellen. But I like the shops, grocery stores, restaurants, and little museums in Vermont ski towns.

My son is skiing in CT this weekend!

Considering a couple of days of skiing at Killington post New Year's, It looks like they will have 65 runs open this weekend so I'm optimistic that they will have more open by Jan 1. But I was optimistic based on the good early season last year too and then VT has a couple of days of flooding rains that washed away a LOT of the snow. It wasn't great. I won't make reservations until we get closer to Christmas.

Mountains in the Berkshires opened today, so yes there should be some skiing later this month - hard to know how many runs etc or the conditions.

We've gone to Snowshoe WVa over Christmas. They generally open earlier in Dec. and aim to have all the runs open by Christmas. We got a cold snap that year and it wasn't bad. But you could run the risk of warm temperatures and bad conditions. Its looks like they're getting a lot of snow made right now so could be a good Christmas there this year if it stays cold.

Some the Pennsylvania resorts are opening today but it's always a roll of the dice. So sure, make plans but be prepared to cancel.

I don't remember local ski resorts opening before Christmas the last few years, but this year it seems cold enough to make snow. Would it be premature to plan a ski trip in the area (or Pennsylvania) during winter break?
