The Patagonia ones are great. I think they say the down sweater isn’t waterproof, but my kids have worn those since age 5 and are now in high school. They have ski jackets they rarely wear and say the Patagonia is great, even in snow

Can't do thin, not puffy, water resistant and warm. For warm and water and wind resistant you need bulkier and thicker fabrics. I love Reima coats. From Scandinavia and developed for wet and miserable weather. You can try the LL bean one like this: https://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/124930

I got my kid a nice jacket from marmot that is really thin and waterproof. It keeps him warm, I'm thinking it's a ski type jacket.

I would get him a silk undershirt. I have one myself and it's so light you forget you're wearing it. It does have to be hand-washed though.
Also have him wear thin smartwool socks daily. Even if he's not complaining about his feet, he'll be warmer if he's not losing heat through his feet.

He needs to wear sweat wicking long underwear like the HeatTech from Uniqlo. It is very thin and soft.
My 5th grader wears a regular shirt, a hoodie, and a packable puffer from Primary or REI over top.

You are going to find a jacket he can comfortably tie around his waist, that isn’t heavy but is super warm (it wasn’t that cold today) and ALSO water proof. Those 4 things do not exist in a single coat.

Thanks PPs,I should have mentioned that he’s in men’s sizes - 5’2 125lbs-ish. He wants it to be thin but warm is the best way I can describe it, well — thin enough to stuff into his backpack and not lift up his backpack off of him too far but also that he can tie around the waist but have it in his words: “lay flat down and not puff out” when he walks and takes it off. That’s why the heavier snow jackets ruled out.

I would not get that one. 1) it’s puffy 2) it isn’t water resistant 3) it’s only “warmish” up to 32 degrees

He’s 11. He doesn’t like puffy thick jackets and Primary’s puffer which he’s worn from last year was too thin and still is in his opinion. Also not water proof/resistant. He also hates being wet from light rain showers. He says today was freezing to him, numb hands and cold chest cold.
