It's not about you OP. Three things may have happened. Either someone else got to her first and she's now with that guy, or she was already in a relationship and looking to cheat, or she is just the typical female-at-the-gym narcissist trolling the gym for attention, which you supplied.

There should be men-only gyms to stop this sort of thing from happening.

This. Something turned her off. I’m curious why you couldn’t ask her in person? This stands out to me for some reason, even though I don’t know why. Maybe you read her cues wrong?

Either way, she’s not playing “hard to get”, that’s stupid.

She is not interested. If you ask a girl out who likes you she WILL say yes. If she doesn't even respond it means she doesn't look at you that way. It sucks, but move on. Also, the fact she is not speaking to you at the gym as much is her way of showing you she's NOT interested. She likely feels awkward around you now knowing you like her.

Your best way going forward is to act like things are normal. Don't bring up the DMs or asking her out. When you see her smile and say hello. Only make short small talk and go from there. If you try too hard she will back away even more. And 100% DO NOT DM more anymore. You need to act like you asking her out was 100% not a big deal.

No, she is playing hard to get. Ignore her, she will start contact again, and by then you will have someone else.
