The best Chinese restaurants are NOT in Chinatown.

I guess you’re too elite for the fun to be had on the Stretchy Pants Chinatown Food tour! Your loss!

I recently stayed at the Beacon Grand (the old Sir Francis Drake which has been rehabbed). Union Square area. Price was pretty reasonable, my room had a view of the Bay, and the bar felt glamorous.

We stayed here. I think it’s technically called Hilton Financial District, but it’s right across the street from Chinatown and has a Chinese cultural center in the hotel. I highly recommend the hotel. From the outside, it’s definitely showing its age, but rooms were clean and comfortable, and the price was right. Our room had a great view of the Coit Tower and the bay. It’s within walking distance to a lot of great neighborhoods and dining- the restaurants in Chinatown are amazing.

For fancy food, Kokarri. For more casual fare, Tacolicious.

I live in SF and do NOT recommend tourists stay in Lower Nob Hill, unless they're from NYC. They won't be able to handle the drug use, the homeless, the crazy, etc.

Any of the hotels on 3rd Street in SoMa, or the Hyatt Regency near the Embarcaderos is fine. You can't afford the Mark Hopkins or the Fairmont, sorry.

Restaurants:
Pancake Boy - Noe Valley
Hilda & Jesse - North Beach
Plow - Potrero Hill
YH Beijing - Alamo Sq./Western Addition?
Harborview - in one of the Embarcaderos (4?)
Yank Sing - SoMa
Tony's - North Beach
Che Fico - Alamo Sq.
Salt & Straw (ice cream) - multiple locations
Anything in the Ferry Building
Bob's Donuts (2 locations)

I’m looking for a good, solid, reasonably nice but not luxe or super expensive hotel in San Francisco. We’d like to be able to walk to things. Where have you stayed that you liked?

Also, if you have recommendations for places to eat, that would be appreciated!
