Is Field on a semester or trimester schedule? Do they give grades quarterly? We might have to relocate in the middle of 9th grade if DS gets in next year.

While this could happen at any school we see administration clearly play favorites at Field School. Some kids are penalized for infractions others are not. Disciplinary measures seem to be at the whim of the head of school who is inconsistent in her approach. Teachers in the name of “knowing each child “ also seem slightly unprofessional in how they handle conflicts. Lots of schools have these issues but in a small school ( which is what op asked about ) they stand out more prominently , they get talked about more and leave kids feeling something is off.

In a larger school when the environment is slightly toxic ( like it can be at Field ) there is more space to absorb it.

That’s actually a very good point about these smaller schools. My kid has friends across all the grades.

OP mentioned HS. I think “G10” just means “grade 10”.

Is G10 A 10-year-old girl (soon turning 11) entering sixth grade in the fall? Or a girl in the 10th grade?
Middle school is definitely smaller at both of these schools. Field middle school classes are about 30 to 40 kids and they grow to about 65 in high school. But people choose these schools for the smaller, more supportive environments.

Can’t speak to Field but my child has benefitted from the small size at Burke. Teachers really get to know students and she has a solid friend group. Several new students joined the 11th grade class this year and it seems like they’ve integrated well.

Both schools have a certain feel/vibe and educational philosophy. Either you really like it and want that for your child, or maybe you need a different fit.

Apply to both -- 10th grade is not typically an entry year, so you don't know where will have space.

We applied to both, loved both and are thriving at Field. I’m not sure how to address your concern about size – with your specific concerns? Friend groups? Socialization?

And also curious why you’re looking at these two in the first place. Maybe that can help us give you better feedback.

What about a small size concerns you? Many families actively seek that out.
