I personally would never buy it more than a day or two ahead, but I know people do it. I don’t feel it’s safe in a home refrigerator that might not actually be 40 degrees max, but I am food safety paranoid.

Anyway, the answer to your question is that they are stored for transport and at stores at a much lower temperature than your home refrigerator (like 26 degrees).

For a fresh turkey, pre order one from a local farm and pick up (ready to cook) day before holiday.

Just don’t leave it on the patio!

Wait, what? I bought a fresh turkey at the grocery store last Thursday. It has been sitting in my fridge for the past week waiting for Thanksgiving. Is there guidance that tells me I need to throw it out because it is not good anymore?!?

I have the same question, we bought a fresh turkey last Friday and it has a sell by date of Thursday thanksgiving i am wondering if i should return it and get another with a later sell by date?

I’m not a big fan of turkey, but I can imagine that, especially before Thanksgiving, the meat is stored in specially engineered cooling facilities. Those are far more advanced than regular fridges

Uncooked turkey is only good in the fridge for 1-2 days. How are grocery stores selling fresh turkeys a week before Thanksgiving? Will these be OK on Thursday? Please don’t make fun of me for asking!
