This was my thought, too.
I know a woman who has very curly hair and she lets it dry on its own, then doesn't brush it to keep the volume now. I know she thinks this looks better than giant hair, but it basically looks like she always has wet hair.
For interviews, I would splurge on blow outs.
You sound like someone who doesn't understand how curly hair works. You don't brush it. Ever.
