At GDS, who your teacher is (even on the same subject) makes a huge difference in everything…how much homework the student has, how hard it is to get A’s, etc. I knew teachers had independence at private schools but didn’t realize this much (not sure if GDS is typical in that sense or not).

My 9th grader at Sidwell does most of their homework during school hours and does less than an hour at home (and often none at all).

The teacher mix is a key point I totally did not think about. Our current 9th grader struggled with two really demanding teachers that happened to be in subjects for which he wasn’t super interested. Homework has been all over the map from none to 3-4 hours, but he finally has figured out a few things and it’s more in the 2 hr range.

Exactly, things fluctuate. My DS never seemed to study at home in 9th at STA. Then he got clobbered in 10th, 11th, 12th.

I was worried about the transition to high school (at a "big 3," if it matters) after not having much homework in MS, but it hasn't been an issue. Most nights he does an hour of homework, at most. According to his most recent report card, he's getting straight As and he's taking the only honors class available to 9th graders, so I can't reasonably ask him to study more.

Anyone else?

He might have drawn a lucky slate of teachers. My son was overwhelmed freshman year, he had arguably 2 of the hardest teachers for English & history. Several of his friends had much lighter workloads. Now he is a senior and the situation is reversed.

You have to take it year by year.
