So when they see you walking in the dark, they can quickly run you over.

It’s safer to back into your driveway than to back out of it.

Our neighbor kid growing up was ran over by his mother when she was backing out of their driveway, on a quiet street. I always back in when I can.

We live in a high NW neighborhood (I only mention this bc someone said it was a lower class thing) quiet cul de sac, and one guy backs into his driveway, but doesn't back into his garage like everyone else. Turns out he can't see well and he has found that it's easier to back into his driveway from the street where he can see all around him more easily, rather than have to back out into the street with a more limited view that he has when already in his driveway. He also drives an older car. I know I use my back-up cameras all the time now to back out of anything.

It always astounds me that people continue to comment that people who regularly back in are poor drivers. When in fact, many professions that require driving, police, fire, military, construction, trades etc. instruct people to back in. In my experience, people who back in regularly, can back in with ease in one attempt. They prefer the sight lines of pulling out of a space.

I come home and park in the driveway when nobody is around. But when I leave in the morning, people are out walking their dogs etc. So recognizing that I’m going to have to back up at one of these times, and that my view is more restricted when I’m backing up, I do the harder backup when fewer people are around.

There is so much backup hate on this board, it’s weird.

I'll bite. We have a long narrow driveway. I like being able, first thing in the morning when I'm not fully awake, or it might still be dark, or I might be close to being late for work, to just jump in the car and drive out. So, I back in at the end of the day when it's light and I'm awake.

The parking at the bottom of the driveway who knows, except that perhaps they believe it makes it more obvious someone is at home so the house is less likely to be broken into.

Quick getaway in the morning. Protection against snow and ice in the morning. Seem like good reasons to me.

1. A lot of people in engineering or EMS are taught to do this and required to do it at work. Parking away from the house sounds like this is probably safety habit related (gas fire risk, need to peel out in an emergency, etc).

2. Concern about backing over kids or pets.

3. Parking brake is shot.
