Despite the hype, most acceptances come through rd. It’s great to get decisions (read acceptances) early to ease the stress. But if reaches are true possibilities then your child should absolutely apply rd. Last year my dc was accepted to safeties and targets, and then half of the reaches they applied to - all reach acceptances through rd. Now attending one of those reaches and happy as can be. But if it’s not financially feasible, then don’t bother bc it’s not a real possibility anyway

That was our approach . We wanted to eliminate any 'what ifs'. Though after he did so well RD there is a 'what if' with Stanford. lol

We are so glad we didn't listen to everyone telling us its a waste of time. He got into two Ivies RD and Hopkins.

Yes.

RD is when my son was accepted to Ivies and T10s last year. No hooks.

He didn't ED anywhere.

She applied to 6 total. The in state safety is a very solid school, well-liked. She has another in-state safety, the in-state reach and target, and then two out of state (one public, one private). I think her answer is that she is unsure. It's very hard to say without the other two in-state decisions.

Did he end up going to one? I am on the fence about it all because the target and reach in our state are excellent schools, very cheap too. I worry adding $$$$ reaches would make things more complicated if she got in (the reaches OOS are the level of the reach in state). Just wish we knew all the in-state stuff before needing to decide! My preferred way would have been to apply to more EA but she didn't have the energy to push through that many by November 1st.

I think you mean she applied to a total of 5 though. The real question is, would she/you be content with the in-state safety? Of course! I mean I wouldn't apply to a dozen reaches, but why not try a few - there are always kids who are surprised with happy news in the spring. If we collectively give in to the inevitability of ED taking over this process, it will.

Did he end up going to one? I am on the fence about it all because the target and reach in our state are excellent schools, very cheap too. My DC applied everywhere EA. Luckily, that was an option. They have added one reach for RD. This is a super-reach and they have the time now that all their original apps have been submitted.

If it was another college on the same level as those already submitted, I don't think my DC would be doing it. It sounds that that is what you are suggesting. The RD app my DC added is a step up and they might as well see what happens.

DD got into an in-state safety she'd definitely consider. We are waiting for one in-state target and one reach, one in December and one January (applied EA to all three). Is it worth applying to some out of state target/reaches RD or a waste of money and time? Would you wait until the December target decision? If she got into it she'd definitely go there. She has only applied to one safety OOS and one reach OOS.
