How fast is fast? What time standards is your kid swimming and how close are they to 13?

Almost every top group in this area is morning based due to limited lane availability through the rec centers in the afternoons so they start getting kids used to early practices early on so they have time to adjust before getting put in the top group(s). If the top group your kid would eventually go to is in the morning anyways then there is no point in going afternoons now and should just start getting acclimated to mornings.

This is dumb. I would avoid early morning practice for as long as you can. It isn’t any easier to adjust as a 13 year old than it is as a high schooler.

It depends on how much the kid wants to stay on a high performance track and how old they are now. If kid is 12 and is dedicated to staying on a high performance track, I wouldn’t pick a club/site based on the practice schedule for the next 6 months knowing that it will be different next season if 13 is the start of the next high performance group.

Agree! Our DS is in the NCAP Burke Bronze I and they practice from 5-6:30 M-F, the Silver I group practices alongside from 5-6:45 so our DS has been able to train up with this group a couple times and week until his 13th birthday and then his practices will remain the same after his birthday.

The summer schedule is different because they use an outdoor 50m for most of their practices and they tend to be early am. During the year they have exclusive use of the Burke Racquet and Swim club pool so 3-4 groups are practicing simultaneously.

+1, I was going to say the same thing. If your swimmer continues on the high performance track, age 13 is usually where most groups have at least 1 weekday am practice. So if your swimmer is 12 and will be 13 at the start of next season I wouldn’t worry so much about avoiding a site that has am practices.

Hi! We are thinking about moving this year, location in NoVA TBD. My child currently practices 4/5 days per week, indoors, at 5 pm in the evenings. He is in a high performance (minimum to join is several A times) group. Would y’all mind sharing whether your club/team/location has similar evening, indoor opportunities for your high performing 11-12 year olds? So many of the teams seem to favor 4:45, 5:30, or 6 am practice times for this practice group. Thank you!
