9 year old kids don't really hit hard enough for him to get injured.

7th grade is a fine time to wait to but he may be scared by that point because of the skill gap that will exist unless he is very athletic.

9 is about the age that a lot of kids start.

My kids have done soccer, basketball, wrestling, flag football, and football. I saw the worst injuries in soccer since the kids are looking at the ball and running into each other. Football players know they're going to get hit and kind of understand that they need to protect themselves.
