Some jobs will pay for relocation, where movers will come box up your stuff and store it, and put you in temporary housing while you look for a place.

Other jobs you pay for the move. You might want to price out what a move costs to figure out if it is worth taking your furniture if you are paying for the move.

Steps to take now are figuring out what you need to keep and what you can get rid of. If you know the state, start doing research on where to live. Figure out if you would try to buy a place or rent. It might be a good idea to rent as once you live there, you will learn more about it - the neighborhoods, what the commute is actually like.

If you have kids, school districts are an important consideration.

Find location, narrow down location, do some light real estate shopping. If you have kids, look at school districts. Then, find a job. Then, make the move!

It’s fun. After the move, join a bunch of stuff if you don’t have kids.

We did it many years ago. First the location narrowed down to a county, then the job search, then the apartment search. We got lucky on that one with a local realtor who found us an underpriced gem in a building where she used to live. If I were to do it again now as an older person, I'd want to move somewhere where I can buy very quickly for cheap to be mortgage free/low mortgage, and maybe have that come first before the job (we could in our present circumstances, financially after selling our house).

Depends on money and if the job is offering relocation, but you just...do it? Find a place to move into, call the moving company and you can do it in days. Obviously better to have more planning time and do things like scout out housing, purge your current place, pack if you can't pay for packers, etc. but it's very doable though intense. I've moved countries in a week.

First, you get a job in the area where you want to move.

I don’t have any jobs lined up but I want to move immediately. I have a general idea of where I want to go but I don’t have a place or plan. I don’t know how to make this kind of move. If you’ve done it before can you please give me some tips?!
