Not everyone likes to discuss or participate in politics and yes, that's also fine. I grew up in a church that forbade participating in politics. Some members vote but membership can be revoked if one becomes an elected official.

What they mean is talking about social justice at all makes them uncomfortable or guilty, they probably contribute or are a bystander and don't like talking about it.

They are giving themselves a pass to make uneducated and uninformed choices. But don't worry, they are about to FAFO. Wait until 'dem tarriffs hit, housing and food prices go up due to mass deportations and a bunch of other stuff that will hit their pocket book soon.

The only person who can say they’re not political is someone who politics is unconcerned with. That is NOBODY. Everyone is considered because everyone has a position and a part to play in American theater. That is literally what the founding fathers and the ancestors of white people have been working towards for centuries and now we have to deal with their descendants walking around like fools claiming they don’t have a role while benefitting from, and perpetuating consciously and unconsciously, covertly and overtly their racism and racist biases onto everyone else.

In my experience it's usually a few things. A friend of mine doesn't vote because she thinks it "doesn't matter because they are all terrible." Or, it's usually someone who is both highly conflict averse and knows they are on the wrong side and they don't want to confront that. Or, it's people wealthy/insulated enough by whiteness to be "fine" no matter what happens. I don't get it, but you'd be on the safe side to assume that when white people say that it's because they actually want to say they lack the critical thinking skills to consider perspectives or don't take interest in community beyond a surface level.

I'm from the Deep South. It means they're Republicans but don't want to talk about it with you. Their slogan used to be "don't talk about politics, sex or religion" but now that public discourse is pretty much only those things, they've switched to being "apolitical" or "what happens in your house is more important than what happens in the White House."

Don't take their words at face value and watch what they do, not what they say.

People outside of DC don’t talk about politics like we do here. Often they don’t want to get in an argument about beliefs.

It means the same thing as those who self label as a "centrist". Translation: I have some spicy views that you likely won't agree with, but I'm too cowardly to openly align with them.

It means, they want to remain your friend for reasons unknown, but likely support things that put people like you down. I don't believe anyone can be truly apolitical. It's usually cowardice of not wanting to be seen as a bad person. You'd think the guilt would make them be introspective about their views, but no. 💀
