Ours go to a 10 foot ceiling and I store long-term items up in the top cabinets and use a step stool.

I’m the pp. We saw a lot of dumb looking double stack upper cabinets with lighting/decor inside, which I think will look very dated fast. And kitchens with disproportionate skinny super-tall cabinets, which o also think look bad. Leaving a little space above the upper trim looked more graceful to me in our space.

I have space above and it looks fine. The trim goes up part of the way but there’s no visible “shelf.” It is so high TBH that the eye doesn’t really notice (I had to go check to see how it looks). As it is the top shelf of our cabinets is so high as to be basically unusable, so I don’t wish for higher cabs.

We did ours this way because we have an area with a 45 degree ceiling slope (the bottom of the slope meets the top back edge of the cabinets. The slope joins the ceiling near the front top edge of the cab, so in those areas te ceiling color matches the white cabinets and it’s truly not eye catching.

Do a great counter/black splash and that’s where the eye will go.

But you'll never use those upper cabinets. They're ridiculous

We'd use them. It'd just be for things not used very often, not for daily/weekly things. Think: pie dishes, Christmas mugs, extra plates, vases, serving bowls and platters. I could name loads of thing I'd use. I have a few cabinets that tricky to access and they are full of "low use" items. And yes, we'd get a sturdy step stool. I guess if you are over 70 I might stop, but most healthy people in their 60s could still use a step stool.

I have 10' ceilings My cabinets go maybe 18" from the ceiling. I have to stand on a chair to reach the op shelf as is. the ones over the fridge go to the ceiling and I never use them. No soffit.

It’s not about functionality. It looks better with the cabinets to the ceiling. It just does.

I don't know. I think it would look kind of unbalanced with just those boxes on top of regular cabinets. I'm looking at my cabinets right now. They appear to be about 3.5' tall. 5 or 6' cabinets would look strange when the bottom ones are only 36" tall. To each their own though.

Better than 12 inches of space that collects dust. It’s like wearing pants that are too short. Just doesn’t look right.

I don’t have them to the ceiling and I thought it might bother me (kitchen is as we bought it) but actually I never think about it or notice.

We have cabinets all the way up. The top ones are empty, but similar homes without them look unbalanced. Use glass fronts to change up the look a bit; nothing need be in them, either way.

I hate that dust-collecting shelf above the cabinets. Just soffet to the top.

Our home has 10 foot ceilings. I am not interested in doing stacked cabinets. Is it ok not to take the cabinets all the way to the ceiling? Thoughts and opinions are welcomed.

Thanks.
