No one knows the significant of VAALS yet really but our school used iReady for level II and this is now the corollary.

The only kids automatically considered for LIV services are kids who have in-pool scores. LII means nothing for being considered for LIV.

LII services being offered by the school indicates that the Teachers and AART see that you child needs something more then is being provided in the classroom. It is not a guarantee that a kid will be selected by the committee but it might lead to better HOPE scores because Teachers already feel that the child needs something more.

Depending on your school, it just might make your AART more familiar with your kid. My first grader has level 2 services and gets once a week pull out for both math and reading with the AART teacher.

It might also put your kid on radar to start looking at their work to put in their AAP portfolio, but not necessarily.

Teachers don't select for level IV placement ( it is a county committee) but there is a local committee that can decide level III and level III. The kid's second grade teacher is the only one with teacher input with the HOPE Score.

This. And I agree with a PP that VALLS isn't designed to be an input for AAP; it's mainly to look for potential reading issues, not assessing how far above grade level the student is. Not sure what they will do to replace the iReady Reading Percentile because the Fall iReady percentiles were used last year in my DS's AAP packet. Also, you need to parent refer no matter whether the child is receiving Level II services or not.

On the other hand, if the child is showing any sign of reading difficulties this might indicate full-time AAP is not appropriate. So presumably the VALLSS scores are considered but perhaps are less informative than I-Ready was. I know my kid is doing new in-class assessments of reading and that might get considered somehow.

That is not the new norm, that's how it's been for years. There is no LIV AAP - or LIII for that matter - until third grade. Before third grade there is only LII, which varies widely between schools. At many it means nothing - just a marker to appease parents. At some it's used to flag students to watch for full-time applications later.

Isn't this intended as a screener for reading difficulties and not something that can be used to indicate reading ability? That is, it might be more sensitive to difficulties but not very sensitive to strengths/advanced performance. My dc scored 719 and I know dc does not have reading difficulties but I did not take this as indicating much if anything about how advanced dc is.
I do wonder about this change, though. I thought i-ready was to help with identifying needs on both ends of the spectrum, so I'm not sure what is being used now to identify advanced literacy. I though the i-ready was useful (helped me see where dc was doing well and where more support was needed).
