Don’t know the girls side, but my son got some good advice from his trainer at a showcase after the first scrimmage where he didn’t do much. The trainer’s advice applies equally to try outs —- focus on things you can control and make an impact there. Get the ball by getting rebounds and bringing the ball down, get shots by following in drives and cleaning up misses. Force turnovers by trapping when someone picks up their dribble, help teammates who pick their dribble and need help. Stuff like that. In scrimmages, when kids see your kid doing those things and being active, they start passing to your kid and involving them more. My kid went from basically not touching the ball in the first scrimmage to being the default ball handler by the third scrimmage.
