My kid was WL. He had a good interview. He did not apply early and I sometimes wonder if he would have been accepted if he had.

^ meant not bad if don’t get from Yale, they just want more info, most will not be accepted regardless of interview status.

Mine had 5. They all went well. He was excited upon returning. And they all indicated he was a strong candidate. WL RD at one. Rejected at others and accepted to one RD w/out interview. Don’t think there was a correlation though.

Depends on school. Yale means they want more context, not getting can be admitted and satisfied with what they have. Some speculation last year that Harvard meant you passed a hurdle. The rest don’t mean anything.

Yale only interviews if in the running.

If you're in the top 2% (athlete or donor etc) , they don't.

If you're in the bottom 80% (not really a possible admit), they don't.

so it's a good sign

Yale is the only school where they play a real role in decision making. Everywhere else is just as many as they can get in where they’re available, which I think is why they start contacting so early.

It only means anything if it’s Yale.

Unlikely there is ANY sorting prior to interview.

Do understand that interviews can matter, particularly for a student the college is uncertain about making an offer to (which, again, is something the college is unlikely even to think about prior to the interview).

It is not indicative of something special.

The schools I’m familiar with try to interview everyone. There’s no initial cut.

What it means depends on the school.

Getting an interview is ordinarily not an indicator of anything more than a nearby Alum interviewer exists.

DD was just contacted for an interview. I know the majority of applicants are offered the opportunity if an interviewer lives nearby. But is there any sorting that happens before AOs assign interviews? Would an Ivy spend volunteer resources on an applicant who has no chance of being admitted? I realize the odds aren’t in her favor - just looking for a sliver of hope.
