This is true, but you can still do the IB program at RMHS starting in 11th grade even if you didn't get into the magnet cohort that starts it in 9th grade.

True. RMIB is just a more robust program.

RMIB is more intense than the Rockville IB. The peer group is different. RMIB Is a county wide magnet program; Rockville IB is not.

I think the course offerings are also a bit different between the two schools.

For example, math:

RMHS

RMIB has way more math offerings than Rockville, including MVC. My kid went to RMIB, and took MVC. I think I heard that RMIB has one of most students in any IB program in MVC; many are IB students in the MVC class.

Rockville HS IB really starts in 11th grade, whereas RMIB program starts in 9th grade. They start taking courses designated with an RMS, which is only available to RMIB magnet students. RHS doesn't have this.

Fellow parent of an IB kid who graduated at Rockville a few years ago, OP.

I would say the IB program at Rockville is pretty good. My son did the diploma program at RHS and there was a lot of positives. The IB coordinator is excellent at managing the program itself and the entire IB student group is pretty flexible at the school. Since I would agree it's a hard program and since Wood doesn't offer the MYP program as Julius West does, your kid should still be at least fine at Rockville unless you want to stay at Richard Montgomery.

The one downside I would however be careful is that since Rockville is one of the smallest high schools in the county, the program has a larger schedule so your kid might want to have an organized schedule.

Hi,

So my son recently had applied for the IB program during high school, and he currently is in 8th grade right now doing the MYP program at JW. MCPS recently had e-mailed him to apply for the IB program by the time he goes to high school and I honestly do strongly support his idea to commit to doing IB despite it's difficulty. I'm not sure yet if he wants to do the certificate or diploma program, but if he is able to do IB in high school, we have two options to either go for RM (our zoned high school), or move to Rockville since it's closer to our house and they also have an IB program.

Is there any difference between the RM and Rockville IB programs? It's easier since both schools are right next to each other, but I need feedback to see which school would be better in terms of the IB programs.
