You shouldn't buy your fruit ripe. You should buy it about to ripen so that you can get it home without incident and then let it ripen. Especially pears which get very soft when properly ripe.
Wrong. Pears, peaches and nectarines don't ripen properly in paper bags. I can't tell you how many times I've tried it and still got a hard core (which indicates too low of a temperature whike being shipped from FLA). I don't waste my money. Stores sell hard fruit ONLY because it ships better green.
