The US state department has very different advisories for different Mexican states. Some are business as usual, others are “do not travel” zones. People always generalize about Mexico, and it’s ridiculous. My parents go there every winter for 8 weeks and it’s fine.

There is wonderful snorkeling in Curaçao!

Grand Cayman has good snorkeling from the beach in certain parts of Seven Mile Beach. Very safe.

Barbados. Safe for a solo female traveler (if you are traveling solo). Nice national parks and hiking. I personally have snorkeled from the beach out to see huge sea turtles.

One side of the island is rocky/ has good surfing. The other is more built up and has the great beaches you can snorkel from. You want the later (one is East and one is West, I always get them backwards).

You probably want to rent a car. Headed there is January myself.

Roatan’s West Bay Beach is just beautiful and you can snorkel easily right off the beach. It’s great. As for the sand fleas, they’re not a problem at all if you don’t sit directly on the sand on a towel or blanket. Just sit on a chair and you won’t even notice them.

You’re getting a lot of misinformation about Roatan.

My one caveat: it’s the rainy season. The weather isn’t reliably dry before December.

Good snorkeling from the beach is tough to find.

I'm 68f never been anywhere. In the US. Everybody loves everywhere and I am so overwhelmed.

Quiet, calm, any kind of natural nature (no captive pet xyz anything) major plus. Wouldn't mind volunteering for some rescue

Not that interested in culture, sightseeing, shopping or nightlife.

I thought Roatan but the sand fleas sound terrible? Great snorkling from the beach but are the beaches nice?
Bonnaire good snorkling not sure about birds nature etc.

Dominica gets mentioned as a nature paradise but jungle not beach?

Probably flying via Chicago or Detroit, moderate budget. Thinking Jan Feb or maybe Dec
