Georgia Tech requires test scores, if I recall correctly. Rice is test-recommended. His current score is nowhere remotely close to where it would need to be.

I would be concerned about making it through a top engineering program. There are plenty of less-selective schools that offer ABET-accredited engineering. I would strongly suggest finding one where his test score - wherever it ends up - is sufficient to submit.

Case western, u of Rochester (I would Ed at both of these) and wpi or rit are if you don’t want to Ed. Others you mentioned are high reaches which could (maybe, if ED) work out in terms of admissions since urm but might not be best academic fit.

Temple, VCU, UMBC, GMU are all schools with engineering, other majors if he decides engineering isn't for him, reasonable admissions, and diversity.

6 APs by junior year, so far, no scores above a 3) (physics, chemistry, AB calc, lang, apush, world)
2 years HS language (through level 4)

Good extracurriculars — varsity sports, great leadership / community service, peer tutor

Plans to take SAT again, and work over the summer before senior year. The only reason I mentioned he’s a minority is to emphasize his desire to be in a diverse environment

Georgia Tech and Rice are top of list.
What else do you recommend?



If Black make it very clear in the application and don't submit that SAT score.

I'll be honest, his AP scores and SAT don't align with his 4.0 UW GPA. That's a red flag unless you can explain it, especially given the suggestion that APs were easier this year.

Not cut out for Engineering at GTech or Rice or honestly anywhere in the T75 for Engineering. The SAT and the AP scores are just not indicative of success at any school in that range.
