She never met up with friends so it wasn’t an issue.


My 9th grader is going with friends again this year. As long as they are in costume I say, why not?

He’s been going with a group sans parents since 6th, but in 6th we did give him geographic boundaries. Our neighborhood in Arlington is very safe.

DD goes with her friends and the moms all go along to socialize. It's fun for us to see the kids and enjoy the decorations while we chat. DD doesn't seem embarrassed but if she were, tough: I'm not required to sit at home just because she doesn't need supervision.

We live in San Francisco and by 6th grade they could go to a neighborhood with friends and then after a couple of hours meet up with parents to go home. We weren’t letting 12 yr old girls take the train at night by themselves.

With my 5th grader we will agree on where he can go but I’m not going with him or his friends as he’d be embarrassed. I’ve got three younger ones to deal with.

There is no official trick-or-treating age cut off.

I think it’s fine to go alone at that age, in a limited area.

However we’ve always had a group of parents who also go out and stay behind but keep an eye on things.

Totally fine to go alone, assuming they are mature enough not to run into streets before checking for cars. We ended up as parents walking in a separate group behind them just to chit chat and drink some hot apple cider as we walked. The paid no attention to us but we got to see the little kids out and about and get caught up.

Nope, it's fine if you live in a friendly neighborhood. My child has some acquaintances that did this last year in 5th.

Depends on the neighborhood and the kid, I guess. In our safe/quiet/low traffic neighborhood and w my generally pretty responsible and careful kid I’ve felt comfortable having him trick or treat without us, w a group of friends since 3rd grade.

6th graders trick or treating with a parent is ridiculous, unless there is a very specific concern.
Middle schoolers are navigating drug use in school, porn on phones, etc. I think trick or treating with friends is a relatively safe and innocent activity, they don't need a parent for that.
