Bullis JV soccer should be fine based on what you say.

+1

Often, even if the varsity team is quite good, the JV teams are not difficult to make. Definitely a question to ask the schools - don't just go by how the varsity team performs.

presumably the kid wants to play during high school not get cut after sophomore year to make room for a new crop of JV players

OP here--DS would like to play soccer/football for more than one year, but I think for the fall he'd be fine if he only ended up playing his freshman year. because he's more interested in playing as a way to try something new/meet people. He would, however, like to play his primary sport for more than just one year. He understands that that's going to be a battle, but this is a sport he's been playing competitively for a long while, does a lot of training, etc. Our list of schools has been shaped a lot based on contact with coaches at schools where he is most likely to play.

Football? Possibly if very fast. Little guys do not do well at football. They get beat up from the game/practices and that’s hard.

Cross country? Sure

Depends on the league. Some private school leagues have strong football, some barely field teams.

This. As a strong fast kid, he isn't playing football for a WCAC school unless he is really strong and fast. He could easily play at some IAC schools

Yes applying for 9th grade.

XC is not appealing to him and, although he might do that if nothing else pans out, it would not be a first or second choice activity.

Also for context—he is small but we are not tiny people. He just hasn’t had a growth spurt yet. Not saying he’ll be football big, but he has a lot of growing left to do.

I am assuming he is applying for 9th grade. At Landon (at least currently) JV football is no cut, JV Soccer is a cut. He can also do cross country in the fall which is no cut.

Looking at a few other schools as well but these are the four with football (and soccer) Landon, GPrep, Bullis, Potomac. I’ve heard all boys sometimes have a freshman football team—maybe I made that up????

Really really depends on the league. Football ranges from D1 recruits who might crush him to easier leagues with walk ons where he could thrive. If you can post the league or school here, you will get better advice. It’s not an easy decision for injuries. On the plus side, I’ve also seen way better coaching and camaraderie for football vs club soccer. It’s a true team sport. YMMV

Depends what private he's at. Some of the WCAC schools have top level talent (i.e. Power 5 , college national championship level players). He's likely to be in over his head there (though if he's a good swimmer, maybe he'll be OK). Many other privates will have **much** lower level football, and he shouldn't have too many problems

No idea how tryouts at private work. DS is our oldest.

Maybe this convo would be better in private school forum??

Could he try out for soccer and if he’s cut do football?

DS is appplying to private school for next year and in the process is thinking about what sports he might play. He’s never expressed an interest in playing tackle football (actually has always said no way) despite playing flag for years. He’s a smaller kid but strong athlete who plays many sports and is now talking about football. We were hoping he’d pick soccer back up but he feels he would be so far behind everyone bc he hasn’t played since he was in elementary. We are not football people at all and I’m honestly struggling with this concept—mostly from an injury perspective.

Can people weigh in with details about what HS football looks like for a smaller kid? I know most boys start playing football in HS so at least he’d be in the mix from a skill perspective given his background with flag. He has a good arm and is quick. Should we just let him go out for the team?

Is he really too late to pick soccer back up? I’ve heard most serious soccer kids don’t even play for their high school and many schools have freshman teams in additional to JV. I’ve heard soccer has a high rate of concussions too so many I’m not thinking rationally (eg soccer is safer than football)????
