How do you find a doctor to shadow?

A surgeon my DC shadowed did the same thing. It was definitely eye opening.

For BS/MD its better to gain research experience and get your name published in a journal but a good LOR after shadowing adds value.

Even if kid isn't interested into medicine, its a beneficial experience and environment if he can't secure internships aligned with his interests.

They are there to observe, watch and listen to understand scope of the job, not to learn medicine and surgery.

My DS shadowed a gastroenterologist and watched colonoscopies for 10 hours. Good times 😀

In high school? Why? Chase girls.

My kid shadowed an orthopedic surgeon in HS and loved it. Got to watch a couple of achilles repairs and and some knee surgeries and loved it. Went pre-med with a biochemistry/econ major and as they shadowed in college saw the deeper realities and bureaucracy they have to deal with decided it was not their cup of tea. Next stop law school. Moral of the story is make sure they shadow multiple specialties and just not the cool ones. Match Day could end up brutal otherwise and then it's a lot of years to be something you're not passionate about.

Depends on the doctor. Some will let you shadow surgeries. Some doctors are very engaging and explain what they are doing, others just pretend the shadow isn't there. It is very interesting the first few times, after 20+ hours of shadowing it starts getting a little boring.

No. It was a good way to get a glimpse into the realities of medical profession. One experience made them more interested in one career path and one experience had the opposite effect.

They just shadow them. :p My DC literally just went from room to room with the doctor. They could not shadow on surgery days.
