Your DH should have picked up the chicken like a Renaissance Fair character and ripped it apart with his teeth 😄

I don't believe for a second that you were the only ones who received such bad service unless you had a server that nobody else had.
There was something clearly very wrong with the service that day. I would have been wondering what went wrong instead of thinking if I should tip or not.
There is no wrong or right answer here when it comes to tipping. You feel differently than DH. How did you not wonder why such bad service was happening to you? I have never received such service or seen it after working in restaurants nearly 3 decades. Another server would have stepped in if one needed help.

I would have tipped at least 10% and told the manager.

I probably would have tipped 10-15%. But I don’t begrudge you for not tipping.

He had to tear his chicken apart with a spoon and fork. No tip.

You weren't wrong.

I wouldn't not tip, though. I'd probably leave 10% or maybe 15%. Less than my usual 20%. But it sounds like it was bad enough that I wouldn't call you wrong for not tipping.

Not at all. You should write "terrible service" on the tip line so people know why you didn't tip.
As a guy, your DH wanted to tip because he didn't want to be viewed as a cheapskate.

No. Tipping is supposed to be tied to service. You didn't receive decent service so it makes sense that you didn't tip.

I don’t think I’ve ever not typed before but the service in my opinion was so bad I didn’t. DH ordered a chicken dish and was never given a knife after asking twice. He had to use a spoon to hold down the chicken to pull it with a fork. We were asked if we wanted bread and never received any while all other tables seemed to receive bread as soon as their order was taken. We were never offered refills on our drinks (we sat with empty cups for half the meal) and we asked for the check 3 times and waited about 20 minutes to get it. I was so fed up I didn’t leave a tip. DH says he would have still tipped. Was I wrong here?
