I was going to suggest Pittsburgh too. Love the National Aviary. The children's museum is nice also.
Depending on where you've already been in Virginia, Newport News/ Hampton has a lot for kids. Virginia Living Museum, Bluebird Gap Farm, Buckroe Beach, Virginia Air & Space Museum, Mariner's Museum.
The Mariner's Museum is only $1 and has a kids room and a playground and a nice trail by the lake and James River. Someone mentioned birds above. There are lots of birds usually on the Lion's Bridge side and you can sometimes see heron on the river.
