Would not bother with HP for what you're seeking. GB is excellent for your purposes, coaches are great.

Another way to look at it is HP is good for elite players, while GB is better for mediocre players. I have noticed it’s the top boys from Arlington/McLean etc training at HP every weekend (usual families most probably know on here), while GB is much more oriented to newcomers, beginners and those looking to improve but not looking for intense training.

Each has its merits, but they are different.

HP is garbage unless your kid is talented. They only care to develop 2-3 kids a clinic at best. Save your money and go elsewhere unless the owner is personally interested in your player.

We’ve done both. If you don’t play travel yet, do Golden Boot. It’s geared more towards your experience level and my kids in travel have found HP Elite more intense and more importantly, there are going to be kids who will not be patient with your kid if he isn’t as skilled as they are.

At 10 years old you really don't need a private coach to train. I strongly suggest you visit a few different clubs if you are looking to go the travel route. Ask around to see if your son can go to a few of the team practices to see if its a good fit.


Every single top team player my kid has played with (high school now) started private training in u10 or 11.

Hp elite is excellent but extremely pricey and your son needs to be in excellent shape or he will hate it.

HPE has been very good for our 10 year old son. But he has been playing travel for a couple of years now. Quite a few of the kids who are “regulars” play for top teams in the area. The coaches play fast music, keep them moving, and expect them to work hard. It might be a little bit tough at first if he is not used to the pace. I would follow their recommendation to try HP Speed first and then go from there. If it goes well, then ask about doing a different class.

Golden Boot classes were a great fit for my kids when they were getting ready to make the rec-to-travel switch. Their instructors were great... the Travel Prep session is good, and so are the Footskills and the Art of Scoring Goals. My kids have also done HPE (After playing travel for a bit) and those sessions are really well done with LOTS of touches on the ball. Definitely more serious than Golden Boot.
