29% AA is fairly high for most non HBCU public colleges.

We really liked ODU for the more diverse student body than most. The department my daughter was considering seemed even more heavily AA, which was not an issue for us at all.

29% is triple or quadruple North Arlington or northern/western Fairfax publics. Only southern Fairfax publics like Hayfield would approach those numbers. So for the average DCUM poster who lives a sheltered existence 29% will stand out.

I think it makes sense that african americqn students in many cases would choose ODU over nearby Norfolk State. An understandable preference for some.

The public historically AA university in Norfolk is Norfolk State University.

By contrast, ODU originally was the Norfolk campus of W&M, but has been independent for a long time now.

ODU is very diverse, reflecting the demographics of Hampton Roads, from which most of its students come. They also have a large population of first gen students. But no, it is not “considered” an AA school.
