I’ve never heard of anyone going from on level pre calc to BC.

Really? So, you’ve never heard of it. It’s pretty common. My kid is doing it.

How's it going? Calc BC vs AB is much more intense than Honors vs on level precalc.

Its going well. Good teacher. We got a tutor to ensure they keep up as many other students already did AB. Right now they are just working on AB.

Well it happens ALL the time. BC is just the year long version of Calc whereas AB is the half year version. Same subject, more material.

No Multivariable? That is the 12th grade math for the kid who takes BC in 11th.

The problem is not all schools have multivariable so kids run out of math classes. Not sure what we will do. Our school pushes slowing down as they don’t have advanced math.

They can take AP Stats which is very useful.

That still leaves one more year of no math as you are required to have four years of math if you start Algebra in 6th.

Could he do either

On level precalc to AB to BC

or On level precalc to calc with apps to BC

Or is there a reason he's limited to the choices you list?

Does he have the bandwidth for some tutoring or a summer program to help when he makes the jump?

My DS went from honors pre-calc AB (as a junior) to AP Calc BC, not because he likes math or wanted to pursue STEM, but he wanted the challenge before college. It was hugely difficult - took hours of studying every day, reviewing class material and online videos/explanations to supplement. He eventually managed a C and a 3 on the AP test. That didn't seem to affect his college prospects as a humanities major, but if yours wants to pursue engineering, not sure I would recommend it.

But if he’s decent at math, I’d go for AB next year and then BC senior year. That’ll provide a solid calculus foundation.

Agree with this.

Guidance counselor isn’t great so can’t hurt to ask here.

Dc is a sophomore in on-level precalc. Good at math but adhd inattentive type. He seems to be maturing to where he is ready for more challenge and he is interested in studying engineering in college.

It looks like the path he’s on is precalc >> calc with apps >> calc a/b

But I also see a path on the MCPS site that could potentially be precalc >> honors precalc >> calc b/c

Is that something that’s done? If he’s up for the challenge it would be nice for him to have the option of getting to B/C. But from what I’ve read so far, Calc with Apps does not prepare students for Calc b/c, but honors pre Calc could.

Or would that be an odd progression on college apps?
