Kid #1, HS class of 2018: Applied to 3 colleges, 1 reach and 2 safety. He actually liked one of the safeties just as much as the reach, if he had been accepted to both he would have had a hard time deciding. But he was rejected from the reach and accepted at both safeties.

Kid #2, HS class of 2020: Applied to 5 colleges, 3 safeties, 1 target, 1 reach. Similar to his brother, he liked one of the safeties just as much as the reach. He was rejected from the reach and the target, accepted at the 3 safeties.

Kid #3, HS class of 2022: Applied to 5 colleges. According to vinelink they all should have been safeties, but he was rejected at 1 and accepted to the other 4. The one he was rejected from was actually his least favorite (we actually visited after applying, but before decisions were out and both of us agreed that it was not a good fit for him.)

Kid #4, HS class of 2024. Applied to 5 colleges, three safeties, one target, and one reach. Accepted at all 5 (chose the reach.)

Class of 2024, a ridiculous amount that was silly in hindsight

15 reaches (4 accept, 7 waitlists, 4 reject)
3 target (all accept)
2 safeties (all accept)

There were some good posts on this in the spring. Were you around then?

I had one go through last cycle and another now - thus why im still here.

Last year was rough.

Private HS:

Of the reaches, kid rejected from three T20, WL at three T20 and accepted to two in RD; overshot for ED (but legacy) which was a mistake (T10).

Admitted to all targets and likelies.

HS class of 2023 kid got into 5 out of 9 schools. 2 reaches, 7 targets (one high), no safeties because of an early rolling admissions acceptance that made the safeties unnecessary. Rejected ED at one reach and waitlisted at the other.

2 waitlist (2 hard target)

One early reach (EA) but clear first choice. Accepted offer and was one-and-done in December. Highly recommend if kid is very clear where they'd like to end up, also if she had been deferred (which I assumed she would) she had a gazillion supplementals that would have had to be churned out in 2 weeks over the holidays so thank goodness that wasn't an issue.

Last year my kid applied to 9 schools. I would describe 2 as safeties, 2 as targets, and 5 as reaches. I am not sure that’s how he would have bucketed them.
He received 5 acceptances and 4 rejections.
My one piece of wisdom/advice is that as you offer input on the application list, recognize that more schools on the list means more possible rejections. Your kid will need more resilience to stay optimistic and keep it all in perspective.

One application (ED) to a likely, one admit.

My kid started apps to 8, completed 6, was admitted to 4

Nothing was a given - she was on the edge of 4 year vs community college. We were surprised by a state school not offering her direct admission-they offered her a bridge program instead which was pointless as the particular school did not offer housing as part of the program.

She wound up at a small school in MA that is known for its programs for neurodivergent kids. Despite a rocky first month, she seems to be doing well now. It seems like her perfect fit

If you have a kid in college or a recent grad, (not looking back to when you were in college) to how many schools did they apply and how many acceptances did they receive?
Bonus if you indicate how many reaches v target v safeties.
