But if you look at cost/mile the used car has less life in it than new. So the math doesn't always work vs. new. And you take a gamble that the used car has a bad owner.

As is always true, the best prices (highest discounts) will be associated with the least popular vehicles, by type, brand, and model. If you want what everyone else wants, you'll pay top dollar.

Look at less popular brands and models which offer the functionality and features you want, without regard to whether or not everyone else is driving the same thing.

You are not alone.

Across the industry, auto analysts say, an “affordability shift” is taking root. The trend is being led by people who feel they can no longer afford a new vehicle that would cost them roughly today’s average selling price of more than $47,000 — a jump of more than 20% from the pre-pandemic average

Hybrids only make sense if you are doing a lot of city driving. So if you will mostly be using the car for road trips, you may not need a hybrid car, if cost is an issue.

You can get a gas-efficient vehicle. Our Subaru Outback is surprisingly fuel efficient, even more so on highways-- we can easily get 470 miles to the tank, and I can easily go a month without refilling the tank.

Consumer Reports rates the Subaru's CrossTrek very highly. It's a small wagon/SUV.

You haven’t shopped used in the last few years. Lots of used selling for $1000 or less than new.

Selling to suckers and fools, you mean. Because those are the only people paying within a thousand dollars of new sticker for a used car.

We’re a couple of years from retirement and we keep vehicles until they can no longer keep going. We’re looking for a new car to take us into retirement - we’re big road trip people so the right vehicle is important.

We think a hybrid is the right choice. We don’t see the infrastructure for an EV to work for us - we like to go and aren’t always good planners so having to be able to charge seems like a bad idea for us. But we don’t think in five years we’d be content with a gas powered vehicle for cost and environmental reasons. And we ran numbers and don’t see a plug in hybrid to be worth the cost. Are we missing something? Is hybrid right for us? What about plug in hybrid?

Sticker shock is due to not having spent more than $25k on a vehicle before. We figure a small SUVish vehicle is right for us - think RAV4 and Honda CRV. We liked the Mazda CV50 but the 70 felt really big. Would love ideas for least costly hybrids in that size range.

Appreciate advice. And we are in Silver Soring so if you have specific dealers we’d love that as well. We’re looking to buy anytime from tomorrow to Thanksgiving - hoping not to go further out.

it's due to all the mandated tech crap in modern vehicles.

So the stock market doubling due to strong economy is acceptable but cost of goods going up isn't!?!?!

We were in a similar place OP but the prices changed our minds too. It was like double our last car purchase. We went was a 3 year old CRV from CarMax. Hopefully we can go hybred next time round

My aunt bought a Subaru. I personally like the Acura brand. Buy it with a warranty used and get the benefits of a new car. Leasing is another option. I will go this route as I age because the newer cars have better safety features.

If you're concerned about cost, I would buy a used version of the small SUVs you're thinking about -- RAV4 or CRV. You have to go back a few years bc these hold their value well, but you can get one for $25K, if that's what you're interested in spending. I wouldn't be too concerned about lack of a warranty. Keep some money aside for repairs. These vehicles are pretty reliable, so the lack of warranty wouldn't be a huge deal. If you're used to driving vehicles until they don't go anymore, I would think you're used to the risk.associatedneith having to pay for car repairs.

Hybrids are unlikely to be great deals as used vehicles.
Prices have risen.

Be open-minded and look at off-lease gas small SUVs that have good quality as well as new hybrids.

I don't know if it's in any way your speed. I think not. But the Jeep plug-in hybrid has been selling with good incentives.

But what about the warranties? And the used car market isn’t great either.
