If you quit, it does become big news and expect to be grilled on why. Even if the answers are obvious.

Love the titles of the books

Realized that they were playing for their parents and not themselves.

DD never wants to spend a weekend traveling to a game or tournament ever again. Too many other things to do.

It takes a lot of maturity to understand that you are not going to play in college (and maybe don’t want to). Why should you keep spending all your free time on this?

The grind starts to outweigh the fun and other rewards. It just becomes awful.

My son quit when he started high school because he was sick of the pressure and games every Saturday and Sunday. He loves soccer, but he does it for fun, and has never been interested in going further with it (not that he would have been successful in that endeavor). He enjoyed the competition, but not the time commitment.

Varsity school coach told them to quit?

Nah just took all the joy out of playing.

Constant pressure to train more, move to a better Club team etc. Too much grind.

That plus wanting to do well on APs and SAT, and do activities that will help get into college, since not going to be recruited for soccer as EDP player.

They couldn’t handle it, the parents couldn’t accept it and pushed them harder and they eventually quit, mostly because of their parents not being able to handle it and accept the fact that they weren’t what they thought they were or once were.

This is very common.

Kid on my DC’s team didn’t make the push from 9th grade to 10th grade to become a regular starter. Realized they wouldn’t get into their target school from soccer and decided to cut-bait to find another pathway for admissions.

Social life/Enjoying HS/time with girl friend suffered. Dropped to a lower level, more local team.

EDP (not ECNL or MLS-Next). Due to varsity coach.

For those who’ve had kids who were regular starters on MLSNext or ECNL teams and have since quit soccer, why did they quit?
