I have never, ever in my 50+ years of life had a checker check my id and my dh's. I would have lost my mind. The manager of that store would remember me forever.

I do blame the cashier. She's being stupid. I would have made a scene.

This happened to me at Home Depot. There was no human to check me out and the check out lost it's mind over 2 small plants I was buying. I had several items including spray paint. I do a lot of crafting a buy a lot of spray paint. I buy my paint at HD, Michaels, Lowes, Hobby Lobby, Dollar Store etc. Ive never had anyone ask for my birthdate or card me. The guy who came to help wouldn't help unless I gave him my birthdate and I refused. I had no idea it was because of the paint. I started to walk out and leave my stuff but asked to see the manager and an older gentleman immediately checked me out.I am over 50 maybe that makes a difference.

It is so dumb.

Reminds me of when I was at the target self checkout and had to wait for the cashier to finish with the customers she was ringing up, so she could scan my ID for cough medicine for my kid.

It was very busy and I couldn’t ring up anything else while I waited.

I'd have left all the purchases on the register, walk out and place an Amazon order as I was walking. That's an insane policy and I wouldn't be shopping there if there were other options.

Right?!?! I kept thinking of the poor mom with her toddlers screaming in the cart being denied glue and paint bc her kids are with her.

I actually did self checkout and it flashed that I needed to show ID- that’s when she came over. Next time I will do just that but I didn’t want to do it right then and there, the employee was very flustered and seemed upset despite my staying calm.

I’d have sent DS to the car and done self check out.

I was with my 14 yr old son at Michael’s in Reston tonight buying a few things including spray paint (to change the color of a ceramic jug if it matters).

The saleswoman wouldn’t sell it to me because I had a minor with me and that she couldn’t know for sure if he’d use the paint or not. Her manager was on break and not available for the next 15 min and I couldn’t wait. I stayed calm and asked her to explain the corporate policy as she understood it and she said she just didn’t want to get in trouble so it was better not to sell it to me.

What would you do/have done in this case? In my view we are losing all sense of rational thought in this country. I didn’t want her to get in trouble obv but I can’t imagine that this is a correct interpretation of this policy. The website states that you have to be 18 to buy spray paint and receive written permission by a parent to use it. Nothing else.
