The travel teams are all going to change very soon, so the team that exists right now in all likelihood will look very different in two years.

They can find a Babe Ruth league, or better yet find a different sport, or get involved in Robotics or something else at school or any number of different things.

At the very least, I would tell my kid they have to pick a Spring/full year activity they plan to pursue if they aren't playing HS baseball.

Let the screaming begin.

Nobody is going to scream at you, but there are plenty of nvtbl teams that play a local schedule. You’re right, babe Ruth would be a fun option too. Or putting in some hard work training for the summer season with the hope of making jv as a sophomore is valid too!

Don’t you think there is value in playing a sport for fun? I play tennis just because I like it and I can get some exercise with friends. Adults play pickleball and softball and soccer and run in races all for fun. I don’t see why a kid should be judged for that.

I do, which is why I suggest finding a different sport to play, ideally with your HS friends. There are many sports to pick that are no-cut, so at the very least...try one of those during the Fall or Spring. Who knows, it may become your new favorite sport.

The HS season is like, 6 weeks long. WGAF about HS baseball. Plus, you get all the politics about sometimes the coach is affiliated with a certain travel program. Or, you get worried about the kid getting bad instruction.

I know a handful of very good players that sit out their HS club, bc their travel experience is more important.

That's a completely different scenario vs. what OP listed, and more akin to high-level soccer players.

There actually isn't a decent national travel team worth their salt that offers a Spring season because even first-round MLB draft picks will play for their HS teams. Also, I don't what you are talking about with a 6-week season. In the DMV, the season starts mid-February and ends in early to Mid-May.

These are all pretty serious and expensive programs with kids looking towards college (Koa may have different levels). They don’t have a spring season, as most play in high school.

This is what I would suggest. I would also strongly suggest getting your kid interested in another sport that he could play in HS. I know our HS has sports like crew, Ultimate Frisbee, and XCountry that are no-cut. Quite a few former baseball players play Ultimate.

+1 on looking into these programs but guessing most will not have a season in the spring. Most switch to grad year teams and the season is winter-summer-fall.

For most teams 14U and up, the high school season takes priority in the spring. But some teams continue to do a little bit on weekends.

Summer and fall, travel ball ramps up. Winter is indoor training — combo of strength, agility and skills.

OP here. HS ball (if he even made it) would be a struggle for him and us as a family, so I'm ok if he doesn't do it! Though, I know he'd love being part of a team for sure.

So what do kids who do summer ball do during the winter/spring? Private training? Babe Ruth? Nothing?

This is what a friend’s son did. He didn’t make the high school team but stayed with his summer travel ball team throughout high school.

I have a freshman who plays on your standard NVTBL 3A team. He was never a kid who had playing in high school as his goal - he just enjoyed the level of play and the camaraderie with teammates.

Now that he's in HS, he's starting to realize he might not want to even try for HS ball. So what do kids do who (for whatever reason) don't play school ball but still want to play competitively? He has an April birthday which is the youngest birth month in 15u (as you all know!) so he could maybe play spring travel ball with a 14u team if one would take him.

Curious what your travel players do if they don't do school ball. Thanks!
