Under u12 they should rotate through all positions. After u13 rotation through 2-3 positions depending on their skill set and mentality. This includes goalies. Goalies should pick up field play experience.

Remember some player will never be very technical but can still play because the a very good athlete. They can work at it every and not develop the technical skills at the same level or rate relative to their peers or the most technical players. That player will not make a good 10 at the older ages.

Rotation through different positions help when the coach changes up formations, when a better player or coach favorite is in “your” position and gives you a better understanding of the game.

No, the best player is not CM. A single player can't control the game. The combined midfield controls the game. A team that controls the midfield usually controls possession for the majority of the game.

PP said "traditionally", which isn't wrong especially at the lower age groups...traditionally coaches put their best player at center mid. Everyone agrees that the best player on the team can be at any position, but typically they're placed in the middle (defense, midfield or forward) at a young age, as players get older the best player can be at any position.

So are you saying that a team is only as good as its centermids?

I'm sure this differs by age, but this was basically true for my DC's team. One player was clearly the best on the team, and almost always played center mid. That player left for a better club, and it's like a different team without them (in a bad way). This was in 7v7 where I assume one player makes a bigger impact than in later ages.

The best player can be in any position.
The best player designation begins with their character and mentality off the field and on.

Their discipline, leadership, communication skills and on-field IQ are top requirements.

If a player at a young age can't be moved to another position and give it 100% with a good attitude, then obviously they aren't your best player.

The best player can be in any position on the field. I’ve CBs as the best player, midfielders, and wingers. The best player is not always the one who scores all the goals; it’s the confidence, decision making, and leadership that they bring to the field.
