For national merit, the cutoff varies by state.

My kid took it in Pittsburgh yesterday and said it was really easy.

My kid's school has 9th graders take it and they encourage to do nothing before. It is truly a practice. They take it next week.

My 11th grader didn’t take it. He’s planning on applying to test optional schools and not taking the SATs so he didn’t take the PSATs. I expect he will be just fine in applying to colleges that are not highly selective, which is his plan and appropriate.

The 10th grade PSAT is literally practice. My child just took it and we will benchmark where he needs to focus. Do I wish he looked at a practice test, or even a practice question beforehand? Yes, but honestly this isn’t worth any stress.

My kid took the Tenth grade PSAT today. She did well on the practice test she took, so we will see. Doing well in my PSAT put me on the radar for college scholarships, which allowed me to go to a good school. So hopefully she will have similar results.
