Yes, make sure the strap can not be cut with scissors or a knife. Find a crossbody bag you can adjust the height so it's at or above your waist.

We were in Lisbon and Porto this summer, and I wore a cross body bag and didn't have any issues. Just be aware of your surroundings

A money belt is so cheap! I got mine on Amazon, in fact I got one for each family member. Best $40 spent. Pickpockets are crafty. I didn't want to spend the whole time clutching my bag and worrying, or actually having things stolen. Even my teens agreed it was a good decision because it was so obvious there were pickpockets everywhere.

I literally had no problems in Lisboa. I found it safer and more tranquil than France or Greece. The people were more like Finland or Sweden - polite and stand offish.
That being said, wear a money belt under your clothes if you are worried - there are some for under $10 out there.

A fellow travel is recommending a money belt,neck lanyard for passport and a slash proof bag. Can I just use my cross over bag and be vigilant. hate to buy so much stuff if unnecessary.
