Common Sense Media is great.

Our child is very sensitive to movies and at 12, still gets afraid.

If we knew the movie in advance and kid wanted to go, we’d watch movie before the party to preview it and so he won’t be surprised/be prepared for scenes.

OP, watch movie before with your kid. Discuss the PG-13 parts.

You may not want to post the name of the movie because it will "out" you, but there is PG and there is PG. If you haven't already done so, check what Common Sense Media and similar sites say.

Personally I'm conservative on media but I've become more okay with a little consensual sexy stuff than I am with violence. I find it more troubling how casually we treat violence but act like such prudes over a little nudity.

Scream it from the rooftops, please! I totally agree.

There are parents who provide alcohol. This is small potatoes.

It absolutely depends on the movie. I tend to me way more cautious about horror/violence/abuse, but consensual making out does not bother me.

So I've let my 10 year old watch the PG-13 Harry Potter movies. I also let her watch the new Barbie movie, despite it being pretty mature. The superhero movies are on a case by case basis. I also haven't let her watch Jurassic Park yet, though she wants to.

What movie is it? Teenage years is a very wide span of maturity and development, just like the year prior.

I'm probably going to say need to relax, as what constitutes PG/PG13 now is much more prudish that when I was a kid.

That said, your kid is going to MS next year, so you better start getting comfortable with a lot more discussion/topics that you are likely currently avoiding.

Censor all you want at home, but i think PG-13 at a birthday party is most likely fine.

It's cute how you think you can prevent your 11 year old from knowing about sex.

Kids in DCs’s grade (5th) are turning 11 this year. My soon to be 11 year old is my oldest kid, and admittedly I am on the cautious side when it comes to media exposure. DC has seen some PG/PG-13 movies, where we were ok with the content. However, in general I’d prefer to wait on exposure to sexual content, particularly since there’s no shortage of movies that are totally appropriate for 10 or 11 year olds.

So, DC has been invited to a birthday party where they will be watching a PG 13 movie. It’s a teen movie, with teen themes. If DC were 2 years older, I would be fine with movie. But they’re not.

Is this a case of I need to relax? Or is it worthwhile to censor DC’s movies a few more years?
