How do you see the DIBELS results? I can't find it in ParentVue.

Most of our kids score below at the beginning of kindergarten. They’ve never taken the test before and it’s timed. One minute for each section.

Ask the teacher what supports he will receive. He will be tested again every 3-6 weeks to measure progress so ask to be kept in the loop. Google the subtests to see what each one measures. The home report gives ideas for practice.

Talk to the reading specialist and if you’re very concerned, get a private neuropsych evaluation to test for dyslexia.

My 2nd grader has dyslexia and is doing well only with a ton of intervention.

I want start by asking for a meeting with the reading specialist and your teacher.

Ok. When a student gets a below benchmark score for the RAN, should we consider testing for learning disabilities?

Start with a meeting with the Reading Specialist and Teacher. You will want to understand any trends and how far below a student is showing in comparison to the average norm. Don't immediately assume or worry that LD testing is need and don't assume it's not. Approach it as something to have further discussion about to determine if more investigation/assessment is warranted.

Ok. My child is sort of straddling the line "at benchmark", getting ok grades, but not consistently either poor or great. It's frustrating to try to figure out if we need to do more.

My own general principle (I teach, but I teach much older students) is that the foundational skills should be as good as a given student can possibly make them, since what comes afterwards is (by definition) much harder. +1 to investigating this, and +100 to doing a lot of reading at home in the meantime.

OP, I would request a meeting with the reading specialist and your teacher, given that your child is in 2nd.

Overall the score was just exactly "at benchmark" but individually was below benchmark in ran and another category. I am not familiar with ran. I asked the teacher what it is and she said my child was able to identify the numbers in that test but not quickly enough.

If your child scored benchmark, why were they given RAN? We only give RAN for students who score below and far below grade level.

If in second grade I would be playing close attention to the skills that are below benchmark each quarter and discuss with the teacher during Parent Teacher Conference. By the end of this year you want to be on level with all reading skills or really really close.

What has your experience been if your child is just at benchmark for dibels? I'm not sure how concerned to be. My child scores exactly at benchmark for second grade, but for decoding and the RAN test, it is below benchmark in the yellow zone.
