Is basketball your DD's first love? If it's not definitely go with D2. Would she make all-county as a D2 player--why don't you see if she can?
If it is, still go with D2 so she will play more--she may prefer to be the big fish/ball-dominant player. Depending on where you live there may be open gyms/training over summar and ahead of the next season during which she can showcase her abilities for the D1 coach and/or for other D1 teams/coaches if D1 is ultimately the goal.

Like if a kid develops well and stands out on their org’s Division 2 team, will they get serious consideration for a spot on the division 1 team the following year? Likewise, can a kid get moved down or not get a spot at all the following year? Are the teams pretty fixed once formed, or are tryouts like a blank slate very fall?

Depends on each individual coach.

In our experience there is always movement/open roster spots but some kids stay put.

Technically, every year is a fresh, unbias start. Kids can/should be upgrade/downgrade from team to team.

In FYCBL, I've seen 2 teams of the same organization playing in the same division. If both teams are good, they both can play at D1 and vice versa if they are bad.

I would pick the team with friends and/or where she would get more play time.

You are "having a hard time accepting a division 2 team" for your ten year old daughter?

Pick based on coaching; commute and friends.

Put her on the team where she’ll get more playing time and more of an opportunity to develop as a player. Division I vs II, A or AA or AAA, winning team or not, it simply doesn’t matter at this age.

Anyone have thoughts on whether it would be better to join a good team playing in Division 2 or join a bad team playing in Division 1. Having concerns the Division 1 team is not going to be very competitive, but also having a hard time accepting a Division 2 team, even if it’s more competitive. 5th grade girls.

Looking for thoughts from experienced parents.
