From an orchard, I prefer Staymans.

From the grocery store, Pink Lady or Jazz.

Nittany originated out of PA but are grown around here. They are tart and crisp, though not as much as grannies. Pink lady is also tart and crisp.

You might seek out Black Rock or Quaker Orchards at local farmers markets.

The apples I like are very different from the crisp sweet ones. Macouns. Gala are decent.

Envy and Opal are the best apples I have tasted: sweet, juicy and crunchy. But I don’t know if any local places grow them.

My kids still always prefer honey crisp from the store - as do I! Orchards are for the experience.

No idea about orchards, but I like same
flavor profile as you OP and also love pink ladies, and I just tried a new to me variety I saw at WF called something like sweet-tango and I loved it.

We love Fuji. Perfect blend of sweet and crisp. I buy the organic versions at Whole Foods. I don't particularly enjoy apple-picking because none of the orchards are organic here, so this means I'd have to get regular Fujis. But occasionally my teens ask to go, just because they're nostalgic.

We've done apple picking and allegedly fresh apple orchards apples from time to time over the years and honestly, all the random types of apples they have never seem very good. Certainly not worth the effort and drive.

We prefer crunchy/crisp and tart/sour apples. All the random variety of apples at orchards are just waxy, mushy, soft, sweet... very meh. They all sort of taste the same.

Honeycrisp and Granny Smith from Whole Foods are superior, to us. Is there a specific hybrid or whatever variety we are overlooking? Or maybe there's a good reason honeycrisp and granny smith are so widely available.
