The majority don’t buy a substantial minority (usually private) do, for a variety of reasons that are logical to them (many applicants would disagree). Because the schools control things like sending transcripts and LORs, they can enforce their limits.

Interesting. Our NYC school limits apps and I thought they were the only ones in the country!

What is the limit? I’ve heard some schools with this approach have increased their limits in recent years given the current climate of the college application process.

They do this so the top 10 kids in the class don't get all the most desirable top 50 admits (when a 3.95 applies it makes it hard for a 3.8 to get a spot). Those schools don't give merit anyway. I'm sure if you talk to college counseling they'll allow to apply to more schools ranked over 50.

I would set up a private meeting, don’t have insider knowledge but I think ours limits to spread the wealth and not have the masses all applying to same schools. I would hope someone chasing merit may have more wiggle room.

Applebee's has unlimited apps.

Is that why it was called Applebee's? Was it invented as an American tapas restaurant?

Set up a one on one with the school counselor, explain the need and request more.

Schools typically do this so kids do not horde acceptances or over saturate a school.

You are asking for other reason AND as long as you are not oversaturating, they should work with you.

I’m really sorry, OP. Our private school doesn’t limit and my daughter is at 14 and counting for the reasons you mentioned. It must be very frustrating.

This is what happens when you play with the elites because you thought you were too good for the rest of us …

I don’t know how widespread it is. But you chose this school and you should have considered this.

I searched and I know this has been discussed a bit, but can I ask how prevalent this is?

I find it pretty classist that our school is limiting apps. It's a private school, but we're not rich. I'd like to cast a wider net for merit. I know this practice leads to a better outcome for the top 10% of kids, most of whom dont need merit or will have access to robust FA at Princeton or whatever. But for the rest of us, this is really hard.
