* achievements/interests/courses (2x 25 words)
* community service (25 words)
* "about me" essay (250 words)

One application for all schools. Can't customize to each program if you apply to multiple.

"written responses should be completed by the student without assistance"

Will successful applicants obey?

It really doesn't matter too much. Most kids have their parents read over it but in the end, if your child has the scores and initiative to get in a magnet, they probably have the writing skills to write 250 words.

Admission is competitive, as there are more qualified students than seats. If the essay is the deciding factor, as many posters have commented over the years, due to many students having the required grades and test scores, then a merely good essay won't suffice.

I don't think essays are the deciding factor or even that most people here think so. An exceptional essay might push someone in 260s ahead of dozens if not hundreds with similar scores. But if MAP score is much higher (e.g. 290+), the score will be a decider. Essay can still probably ruin it.

Can someone share a sample essay that was submitted ?

What are the "required test scores"? Do the magnets see the letter grades only or the percentages as well?

Mine did. They both got into every school they applied to.

Same for my kid.

These are very short passages that can only communicate so much. They don’t need to read like great works of literature. Truly, if a student can’t write them independently, they’re not magnet material.
