Reading Dracula by Bram Stoker-- selected it to get myself in the mood for Halloween

I have actually never read it before. It is beautiful writing, so good that I can forget all the movie versions of vampires

This is the 3rd and final book in this series, which I've really enjoyed. I picked the first book after seeing many posts on Twitter by the author. The books are written in a style that allows me "easy reading". Instantly became hooked on the story.

I read all books using my Kindle via the library.

Before Don Winslow became a world famous writer, he spent some time doing expeditions with teens. I was on two of his tours in the 1980s and got to know him, I even gave him a haircut once.

I picked it because I've liked her other books and the premise reminded me of The Immortalists by Chloe Benjamin which I read years ago but still think about sometimes.

Haven't read enough to discuss yet

Thank you for pointing out The Immortalists. I recently finished Here One Moment. I also like Liane Moriarty books and like premise of how would knowing how much time you have left affect you (I hope people don't consider this a spoiler - it is the basis of the book.) I enjoyed The Measure which asks the same question. I did enjoy Here One Moment in that it was an easy read and interesting enough. However, I did not love the ending and did not leave the book thinking about it like I did with The Measure. Would love to hear your thoughts when you finish the book.

i have never laughed so hard at a book as I have at Stoner. Truly a comic gem.

If you like Stoner, you might also like Nell Zink's Mislaid

Comic? Are we talking about the same book?

Oh, such a good book. Overlooked American classic. I've read all of his novels after reading Stoner, but Stoner is the best.

I just started My Hummingbird Father by Pascale Petit. Its her first novel, normally she writes (award winning) poetry in the UK.

I am drawn in by it, a story of a 37 yr old who goes from London to Paris to reunite with her dying father who she's not seen or heard from since she was 7.

Her poems cover the trauma of some childhood sexual abuse and I know this story is based on her life, so I'm kind of bracing myself for horrible stuff but also very compelled by her imaginative take on things.

Reading on Kindle.

What is everyone reading this month? The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace, by Jeff Hobbs
What is it about? see title
What do you think of it? it's giving me a lot of Big Feelings
Why did you pick that particular book to read? it was suggested in a thread on DCUM months ago
How did you acquire the book? public library - same way I acquire every book I read

What is everyone reading this month? Stash by Laura Cathcart Robbins
What is it about? it's about Laura and her addiction to Ambien and her divorce
What do you think of it? I'll keep reading. Not quite as riveting as the above book, but still good.
Why did you pick that particular book to read? I saw it mentioned somewhere and tossed it on my library list

I just (finally!) finished Rebecca. I don't know why I waited so long. I loved My Cousin Rachel, so of course I should have jumped to read Rebecca decades ago. I loved every second and wanted to ignore my family all weekend. I watched the 2020 movie last night. Wish I could find the 1940 movie streaming.

I started Magic Lessons, the prequel to Practical Magic. I'm hoping to get through all four books this month.

I'm reading Cloudsplitter by Russell Banks. It is about the abolitionist John Brown who led the raid on Harpers Ferry. He is fascinating and I have also been reading a lot of Civil War books, so I finally pulled this off my shelf. I got it at a library sale years ago and the length (it's about 800 pages) has put me off, but now that I started it, I'm flying through it.
