So what the F is the point to test 3x/year?? sorry to students that this is what "education" is all about in schools.

At my kids' schools students are talking about these tests all the time. They told me dozens of scores children were talking about. If they are a decent student they do care.

OP asked about magnet students. These are the ones with 3sigma above the 99% threshold. MAP tests are craps for reflecting any useful information for the kids at the tail.

I was not talking about OP. In fact, I was talking about good students who are considering magnets.

And - stop with the "3 sigma above 99%". That's 6 sigma above average which happens in 2 out of billion cases. So, no, the magnets are not chock-full of one in a billion kids.

3 sigma above the mean, which is 99.8%ile on national norms.

Those are poor students. When my kids go to RSM, orchestra, spanish lessons - everyone is talking about scores they got, their friends got, they heard someone got etc etc. But these are all good students.

There are accelerated and enrichment option in MCPS ES, and map scores also impact being placed in lotteries for magnet MS programs. I would love to see more enriched and accelerated options especially at home MS, but please be honest about what is currently happening.

It can identify weak areas to work on, and these tests can be very effective in screening a large body of knowledge. Students don’t often take comprehensive tests, they are usually geared towards the material tested in class.

They are useful, but few would review the identified gaps.

National norm scores do not increase after 8th grade, because no kid in the entire country cared about MAP in high school, so they can't even get data.
