Get a male bichon. They have less issues with going in the house and are not neurotic.

My family had a bichon growing up. She was a really sweet funny dog with a ton of personality. She was extremely hyper and jumped on everyone and licked like crazy when she was young, but she calmed down a bit when she got older. She loved to play ball and wanted to play and get your attention constantly. They are great because they don’t shed at all and don’t get very big. Overall I think they are amazing dogs and I would definitely consider getting one if we ever get a dog.

If you are getting a Bichon in the next few weeks and you haven’t filled out applications for a puppy from a reputable breeder that has a long waitlist, you will be getting a puppy mill dog that will have bad behavior and health problems.

Wow so interesting. We have a Bichon-toy poodle mix and she is the opposite of a barker. At best does a low gruff sound if she sees a deer. Totally loving dog, a little difficult to housebreak.

So much barking and very difficult to house-train. My mom had 2 and they were the worst part of visiting. She loved them though and didn’t mind her house becoming the dog’s toilet.

I knew one. Off the charts barking at everything. Like an ice pick in your ears. Sweet happy dog otherwise.

My aunt had 2 and they dug in the trash... LOVED feminine hygiene products and makeup and ate them frequently. Barked non stop at every noise and movement outside. They were nuts!

I have Maltipoos but my brother has a Bichon. They are very similar so I speak for all.

The pluses are that they are the sweetest, most loving lapdogs ever. They don't shed at all. They LOVE to be walked but are fine with very little exercise.

I would say that they are all on the barky-yippy side. Not all the time, by any means, but they are excitable dogs. They also took longer to housebreak than dogs I have had in the past (I had heard that that was common with small dogs but hadn't seen it in action).

Overall, I would rate them EXTREMELY LOW MAINTENANCE at home and the sweetest dogs you'll ever meet. But definitely yippy.

OP, we had a Bichon for about 16 years, and now we have a new one after 5 years. They're very healthy dogs that can live very long. My only downside if you want one is to make sure you are careful with their grooming.

We have a havanese and love it but how is one different than the other. Ours barks and is really high maintence.
