Gators and crocs are apex predators which means entire ecosystems are reliant on them to keep the population of other animals in balance. If you got rid of them all you would immediately wind up with oversupply of a host of other animals. Including snakes!

They are also fascinating animals because they are one of the few contemporary species who lived alongside dinosaurs. Their adaptations have helped them survive as swamp predators for 250 million years. That's really cool!

It's also incredibly easy to avoid being attacked by an alligator or a crocodile. There are only a handful of alligator attacks each year and most are not fatal. If you avoid areas where alligators live and don't do stupid things like try to keep them as pets then you can go your entire life without ever once being in danger of an alligator attack.

What about rats and mice????

I think a better question is why do we need so many humans in the world? Shouldn’t we just cull most of them? Such dangerous species that don’t do much for the planet and are always a threat to other species. I’d like to reclaim some ponds, lakes, rivers, forests and oceans, too and not have to worry about dealing with idiots.

Horses aren’t going around intentionally killing people. Alligators and Crocs and large snakes are. I vote for culling the killer sharks and bears too.

I'm all for culling invasive species but the idea that you can just take out part of an ecosystem without consequences is nuts. Look at how much reintroducing wolves to Yellowstone has improved the whole ecology.

Florida would love to hunt Burmese pythons to extinction in their wetlands. They can't. Just like humans can't hunt rats to extinction. They thrive in this habitat (like rats thrive near human populations) and you can try to kill as many as you see but you will only see 1% of what's out there.

Same with alligators.

Also, this thought, why don't we kill X species since we humans don't need it, is very foolhardy. The ecological web that each species is a part of is so interconnected that removing one species affects everything else in a way that you could not have foreseen.

Which ocean are you interested in reclaiming?

Rivers are not supposed to be free flowing. Read Eager Beaver or Beaverland or just google biodiversity.
